Viola Davis is an acclaimed American actress and producer renowned for her powerful, transformative performances across film, television, and stage. Born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, and raised in Central Falls, Rhode Island, she overcame a childhood marked by poverty and adversity. A graduate of Juilliard, Davis began her career in theater, winning a Tony Award for her searing performance in King Hedley II (2001). Davis made history in 2015 as the first Black actress to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as the formidable law professor Annalise Keating in ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder.
