Luka Dončić
Bio
Luka Dončić began his professional career at just 16 years old with Real Madrid, where he became the youngest player in club history and, by age 19, had won the EuroLeague MVP, Final Four MVP, and the EuroLeague championship (2018)—a feat unmatched by any teenager in European basketball history. Drafted 3rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2018 NBA Draft and immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks, Dončić won Rookie of the Year and quickly established himself as one of the most unguardable and clutch players in the world. Known for his step-back three-pointer, no-look passes, and preternatural pacing, he has been named an NBA All-Star in every eligible season since his sophomore year (2020–2025) and has earned five consecutive All-NBA First Team selections (2020–2024). He led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024—the franchise's first Finals appearance since 2011. Internationally, Dončić led the Slovenian national team to its first Olympic appearance in 2020 (Tokyo), finishing in fourth place while leading the tournament in scoring. Off the court, he is known for his playful competitiveness, close friendship with Dirk Nowitzki, signature line with Jordan Brand, and philanthropic work through the Luka Dončić Foundation, which supports children and families affected by illness and disaster. At only 26 years old, Dončić has already redefined what is possible for a European-born guard in the NBA, drawing comparisons to Larry Bird and LeBron James for his combination of size, skill, and basketball IQ—while remaining, in his own words, "just a kid from Slovenia who loves to play."
Accomplishments
2024 – Sports: Led Dallas Mavericks NBA Finals Appearance
Genre: Professional Basketball / Playoffs
Co-stars: Kyrie Irving (co-star guard), Dereck Lively II, P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, Jason Kidd (head coach)
Brief Description: In the 2023–2024 season, Dončić carried the Dallas Mavericks to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2011. After a mid-season trade reshaped the roster around him and Kyrie Irving, Dončić dominated the Western Conference playoffs, averaging 34.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game across the first three rounds. He eliminated the LA Clippers, the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Minnesota Timberwolves (a 4–1 series victory). The Mavericks ultimately lost to the Boston Celtics in five games, but Dončić won the Western Conference Finals MVP award and became the first player in NBA history to lead the entire postseason in total points, rebounds, assists, and steals.
January 26, 2024 - Sports: 73-Point Game
Genre: Professional Basketball / Individual Scoring Performance
Co-stars: Trae Young (opposing star, Atlanta Hawks); Dwight Powell, Josh Green, Tim Hardaway Jr. (Mavericks teammates); Jason Kidd (head coach)
Brief Description: Against the Atlanta Hawks, Dončić scored 73 points—the fourth-highest single-game total in NBA history and the most by any active player (tied with Wilt Chamberlain for the fourth-most all-time, behind Chamberlain's 100 and 78, and Kobe Bryant's 81). He shot 25-of-33 from the field (75.8%) and 8-of-13 from three-point range, adding 10 rebounds and 7 assists. It was the first 70-point game in Mavericks franchise history and the highest-scoring performance by any European-born NBA player. The 73-point outburst came just days after Joel Embiid scored 70 and Karl-Anthony Towns scored 62, triggering one of the most remarkable scoring weeks in NBA history—but Dončić's efficiency (75.8% shooting) stood above them all.
2018 - Sports: EuroLeague Champion & MVP – at age 19
Genre: Professional European Basketball
Co-stars: Sergio Llull (captain), Rudy Fernández, Facundo Campazzo, Pablo Laso (head coach), Real Madrid teammates
Brief Description: At just 19 years old, Dončić led Real Madrid to the EuroLeague championship, the highest level of professional basketball outside the NBA. He became the youngest player in EuroLeague history to win both the regular-season MVP and the Final Four MVP in the same season. In the championship game against Fenerbahçe, he recorded a near triple-double (15 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds) despite playing through foul trouble. This achievement made him the most decorated teenage prospect in European basketball history and cemented his status as the best non-NBA player in the world before he ever stepped on an American court.
