Lewis Hamilton
Bio
Lewis Hamilton is a British Formula 1 racing driver widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in motorsport history. Born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, Hamilton developed an early passion for racing through remote-control cars and karting before rising through the British and European junior racing systems. His speed, precision, racecraft, and determination quickly made him one of the most promising young drivers of his generation.
Hamilton began karting as a child and soon attracted major attention for his talent. In 1998, he joined the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Support Programme, becoming one of the most closely watched prospects in motorsport. He went on to win major junior racing titles, including the 2003 British Formula Renault Championship, the 2005 Formula 3 Euro Series Championship, and the 2006 GP2 Series Championship. His GP2 title confirmed him as a future Formula 1 star.
Hamilton made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2007 and immediately delivered one of the greatest rookie seasons in the sport’s history. He won four Grands Prix, finished on the podium repeatedly, and ended the season just one point short of the World Drivers’ Championship. In 2008, he captured his first Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship with McLaren, becoming the first Black driver to win the title and one of the youngest champions in F1 history at the time.
In 2013, Hamilton moved to Mercedes, a decision that became one of the most important turning points in modern Formula 1. With Mercedes, he became the dominant driver of the turbo-hybrid era, winning six additional World Drivers’ Championships in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. His partnership with Mercedes produced record-breaking success, including multiple Constructors’ Championships, dozens of victories, and one of the most successful driver-team combinations in racing history.
Hamilton’s 2020 season placed him alongside Michael Schumacher with a joint-record seven Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championships. That same period also saw him surpass Schumacher’s all-time Formula 1 wins record, eventually becoming the first driver in F1 history to exceed 100 Grand Prix victories. Known for his qualifying speed, tire management, wet-weather skill, race strategy, and late-race pressure performances, Hamilton built a reputation as one of the most complete drivers the sport has ever seen.
Beyond racing, Hamilton has become a major cultural figure, fashion icon, producer, entrepreneur, and advocate for diversity and inclusion. He launched The Hamilton Commission and founded Mission 44 to support young people from underrepresented backgrounds and improve access to education, motorsport, and STEM careers. His “Still I Rise” motto has become closely associated with his public identity, reflecting his resilience, activism, and drive to push beyond barriers.
After 12 seasons with Mercedes, Hamilton made a historic move to Scuderia Ferrari beginning with the 2025 Formula 1 season. Driving for Ferrari alongside Charles Leclerc, he continued his pursuit of more victories and an eighth World Drivers’ Championship. With seven world titles, more than 100 Grand Prix wins, record pole positions, and global influence far beyond the racetrack, Lewis Hamilton remains one of the most valuable and collectible names in modern motorsport memorabilia.
