Kurt Cobain
Bio
Kurt Donald Cobain, born February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington, rose from a broken home and a childhood marked by poverty and artistic isolation to become the defining voice of the grunge movement and the reluctant spokesman of Generation X. As the frontman, guitarist, and primary songwriter of Nirvana, which he formed with bassist Krist Novoselic in 1987 (later adding drummer Dave Grohl in 1990), Cobain channeled raw anguish, black humor, and pop sensibility into music that would overthrow 1980s hair metal and redefine rock. Nirvana's second album, Nevermind (1991), powered by the seismic lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit," catapulted the band to global superstardom, selling over 30 million copies worldwide and dethroning Michael Jackson's Dangerous from #1 on the Billboard charts. Cobain's fractured, screaming vocals, sludgy guitar riffs married to Beatlesque melodies, and lyrics that veered between surreal poetry and visceral pain made him an icon of authenticity. Follow-up albums Incesticide (1992) and the stark, experimental In Utero (1993) further solidified his artistic integrity. Struggling with chronic stomach pain, heroin addiction, and the immense pressure of fame, Cobain died by suicide at his Seattle home on April 5, 1994, at age 27—joining the infamous "27 Club" alongside Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Amy Winehouse. His death shocked the world and cemented his legacy as a tragic, enduring symbol of outsider art. He is survived by his wife, musician Courtney Love, and their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest singers and guitarists of all time, and Nirvana has sold over 75 million records worldwide.
