Bio

Kevin Conroy was an American actor and voice actor best remembered as the definitive voice of Batman for generations of fans. Born in Westbury, New York, and raised in Westport, Connecticut, Conroy trained at The Juilliard School under John Houseman, studying alongside future stars such as Christopher Reeve and Robin Williams. He began his career on stage, performing in Shakespeare, Broadway productions, and regional theater before moving into television and voice acting.

Conroy achieved worldwide recognition when he was cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman: The Animated Series, which premiered in 1992. His rich, controlled, emotionally layered performance helped redefine Batman for animation, separating Bruce Wayne’s public voice from the darker tone of the Caped Crusader. He continued the role across Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, numerous animated films, and the acclaimed Batman: Arkham video game series.

Over a 30-year run, Conroy voiced Batman in nearly 60 productions, becoming one of the most beloved performers ever associated with the character. In 2019, he appeared in live action as Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths. Late in his life, Conroy wrote “Finding Batman” for DC Pride 2022, a powerful autobiographical story about being a gay actor and channeling personal pain into his performance as Batman. The story posthumously won the 2023 Eisner Award for Best Short Story, adding another major honor to his legacy.

Kevin Conroy died on November 10, 2022, after a battle with cancer. His passing prompted tributes from fans, colleagues, and fellow Batman performers around the world. For many, his voice remains the standard by which all Batman performances are measured—calm, wounded, heroic, and unmistakably iconic.
