Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin is a Russian professional hockey player best known as the longtime captain and superstar left wing of the Washington Capitals. Nicknamed “Ovi” and “The Great Eight,” Ovechkin became one of the most powerful and recognizable goal scorers in hockey history. Born in Moscow, he grew up in an athletic family and developed a love for hockey at a young age, eventually rising through the Dynamo Moscow system before becoming one of the most anticipated NHL prospects of his generation.

Ovechkin began his professional career with Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Superleague as a teenager. His combination of size, speed, physicality, and shooting power quickly separated him from other young players. He became known for his heavy one-timer, explosive rushes, fearless body checks, and ability to score from nearly anywhere in the offensive zone. His talent made him the clear top prospect entering the 2004 NHL Draft.

The Washington Capitals selected Ovechkin with the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft. Because of the NHL lockout, he did not make his league debut until the 2005–06 season, but he immediately became one of hockey’s biggest stars. Ovechkin scored 52 goals and 106 points as a rookie, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie and bringing new excitement to the Capitals franchise.

Ovechkin’s early NHL years established him as one of the league’s most dynamic offensive players. During the 2007–08 season, he delivered one of the greatest scoring campaigns of the modern era, recording 65 goals and winning the Hart Memorial Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, and Lester B. Throughout his career, Ovechkin built a reputation as the greatest goal scorer of the salary-cap era and one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history. He won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy nine times, captured three Hart Memorial Trophies as league MVP, and became the Capitals’ all-time leader in nearly every major offensive category. His signature power-play one-timer from the left circle, often called “Ovi’s office,” became one of the most famous scoring weapons in hockey.

On April 6, 2025, Ovechkin made hockey history by scoring his 895th regular-season NHL goal, passing Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL’s all-time goals leader. Later in 2025, he became the first player in league history to reach 900 regular-season goals. In 2026, he also became one of only two players, along with Gretzky, to reach 1,000 combined NHL goals between the regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Ovechkin’s impact extends far beyond statistics. He helped grow hockey’s popularity in Washington, D.C., became one of the most famous Russian athletes of his era, and inspired a generation of young goal scorers with his aggressive, high-energy style.
