Bio
Prince Rogers Nelson, born June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was one of the most inventive, virtuosic, and iconoclastic artists in music history. A multi-instrumentalist who played over 27 instruments (often recording entire albums alone), Prince blended funk, rock, R&B, pop, soul, and new wave into a signature sound defined by searing guitar solos, falsetto vocals, and provocative lyricism. He signed to Warner Bros. at age 19 and released his debut album For You (1978), followed by the breakthrough Prince (1979) featuring "I Wanna Be Your Lover." His commercial and artistic peak arrived with Purple Rain (1984)—both a landmark album and a semi-autobiographical film—which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and sold over 25 million copies worldwide. The 1990s saw him embroiled in a highly publicized battle with his record label over artistic control, during which he famously changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol (dubbed "The Love Symbol") and painted "slave" on his cheek. He regained his masters and independence, releasing music prolifically through his own NPG Records. Prince died accidentally of a fentanyl overdose at Paisley Park, his home and studio complex in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on April 21, 2016, at age 57. He won 7 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone ranked him #27 on its list of the greatest artists of all time.
