Tony Hawk
Bio
Anthony Frank "Tony" Hawk grew up in San Diego, California, as a hyperactive child whose parents enrolled him in skateboarding to channel his energy — a decision that would birth a global icon. He turned professional at 14, quickly establishing himself as a vert ramp prodigy known for his technical precision, style, and innovation. In 1999, at the X Games, Hawk became the first skateboarder to land the "900" — two and a half full rotations (900 degrees) in the air — a trick that had eluded him for nearly a decade and remains one of the most iconic moments in sports history. While his competitive career includes 12 X Games gold medals and the 1981 NSA World Champion title, Hawk's greatest impact came through the "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" video game series (1999–present), which sold over 45 million copies and introduced an entire generation to skateboarding culture. He founded Birdhouse Skateboards, his own skateboard company, in 1992, and created the Tony Hawk Foundation (now The Skatepark Project), which has built over 600 public skateparks in underserved communities nationwide. Hawk has appeared in dozens of films, TV shows, and commercials, authored biographies, and remains, at over 50 years old, a remarkably active skater. Known for his humble demeanor, business acumen, and relentless drive to evolve the sport, Tony Hawk is universally recognized as the most famous and influential skateboarder in history — a rare athlete who transcended his sport to become a household name across generations.
Accomplishments
2021 - Sports: First Skateboarder to Land a 900 at Age 48 (2021)
Genre: Action Sports / Longevity & Age Barrier
Co-Stars: His son Riley Hawk (fellow pro skater), executive producer Jeff Tremaine
Brief Description: More than two decades after his original 900, Hawk landed the trick again on video at age 48 — proving that age is not a barrier to elite athletic innovation. While celebrating his son Riley's 29th birthday, Hawk casually accomplished the feat, reminding the world why he remains the undisputed king of vert skating across four decades.
1999 - Sports: Landing the First-Ever "900" (X Games 1999)
Genre: Action Sports / Vert Skateboarding Landmark Trick
Co-Stars: Bob Burnquist (rival/teammate), Bucky Lasek (competitor), X Games commentators
Brief Description: After 10 years and dozens of failed attempts, a 31-year-old Hawk landed the 900 — two and a half full rotations in the air — on his 11th try of the night at the 1999 X Games. The moment is widely considered skateboarding's equivalent of the four-minute mile. He remains one of only a handful of skaters to have ever landed the trick in competition.
1999–present - Sports: The "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" Video Game Franchise
Genre: Business & Cultural Impact / Media Franchise
Co-Stars: Activision (game publisher), pro skaters like Rodney Mullen, Bob Burnquist, Chad Muska, Kareem Campbell
Brief Description: The video game series sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling sports franchises in gaming history. It featured a groundbreaking soundtrack, authentic physics, and allowed millions of non-skaters to experience vert ramps and combos from their living room, single-handedly reviving mainstream skateboarding interest after its 1990s decline.
